Detroit Distillery, Ann Arbor Distilling, and Valentine Distillery

March 30, 2025

In recent years, Southeast Michigan has seen a boom in artisanal distilleries. Local outfits like Valentine Distillery, Detroit City Distillery, Two James Spirits and Ann Arbor Distilling offer spirits that rival the names you’d expect to see at your neighborhood bar. Visiting one of their tasting rooms is the best way to experience them.

Detroit Metro Detroit Distillery is located in a historic building that once housed Goebel Brewery and Stroh’s Brewery in downtown Detroit. Eight childhood friends teamed up to create small-batch, artisanal spirits with a focus on locally sourced ingredients. Their goal is to showcase the best of what makes Detroit unique, and their product reflects that entrepreneurial spirit that defined this great American city in the roaring twenties.

They offer a variety of cocktails, tastings and tours. The Whiskey Factory is also a premier event space for weddings and corporate events.

Detroit City Distillery is the first distillery in the city since Prohibition, and they specialize in creating small-batch artisanal whiskey, gin, and vodka with the finest ingredients from local farms. They also produce a line of spirits for bars and restaurants in the Metro Detroit area, and their spirits can be found at more than 300 Michigan restaurants and bars.

Founded in a repurposed 1904 flour mill, Ann Arbor Distilling is deeply rooted in Michigan. In fact, 90% of the ingredients used in their vodkas, gins, and whiskeys come from the state. Popular pours include Fox River Michigan Whiskey, a locally sourced 4-grain whiskey that gets its smoky finish from local cherrywood, and Catcher’s Rye Whiskey, which is made from rye grown at Wing Farms in Ann Arbor.
